Every part of this Allegheny County Courthouse and Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco engagement session was effortless, elegant, cool-without-trying — the kind of vibe photographers dream about. Add in downtown Pittsburgh as the backdrop, and it was magic from start to finish.
We kicked things off at the Allegheny County Courthouse, which honestly never disappoints. If you’ve never stopped to really look at this building, it’s a masterpiece. The grand arches, intricate stonework, and soft, romantic light make it feel timeless and cinematic. The kind of place that instantly elevates photos without feeling stiff or overly formal. Izzy and JW chose it because it perfectly matched their elegant, modern aesthetic while still feeling classic. It’s bold but not flashy, refined without being stuffy… very them.
One of my favorite things about this session was how relaxed they were together. Like many of my couples, Izzy and JW told me upfront that they were a little camera shy. And honestly? You’d never know it. My approach is always rooted in candid, documentary-style photography. Lots of movement, interaction, and space for you to just be yourselves. I’ll guide you when needed, but I never want things to feel forced or awkward. The goal is for you to feel comfortable, connected, and confident. And then layer in a touch of modern, bold, editorial styling that still feels natural.
After exploring the courthouse (and stopping every five seconds because the light was that good), we took a short walk over to Hotel Monaco, which made this session even more meaningful. This is where Izzy and JW will be getting married later this year, and it’s such a perfect choice for them.
Hotel Monaco is cool, colorful, modern, and full of personality — everything you want if you’re planning a laid-back city wedding in Pittsburgh. The design is stylish without being pretentious, and it has this fun, vibrant energy that feels welcoming the moment you walk in. It’s the kind of place where you can throw an elegant wedding that still feels relaxed, joyful, and true to who you are.
Photographing a Hotel Monaco engagement with them felt like a little sneak peek into their wedding day. And I’m already counting down. There’s something really special about engagement sessions that take place in locations that matter to you. Not only do the photos feel more personal, but they also tell a bigger story about your relationship and what’s ahead.
By the end of the session, Izzy and JW were laughing, leaning into each other, and completely forgetting about the camera. This is always my favorite moment. That’s when the real magic happens. No stiff posing. No pressure to perform. Just genuine connection, captured in a way that feels honest and elevated at the same time.
Izzy and JW, thank you for trusting me to document this chapter of your story. Pittsburgh showed off, you showed up, and I cannot wait to do it all again on your wedding day 🖤
